The Musical Legacy of South Congregational~First Baptist Church

In his new book, Richard Coffey traces the innovative and lasting legacy of the 200-year-old Music Ministry at South Church. The story features memorable anecdotes and a large cast of characters, including prominent composers, performers, ensembles, church leaders, organ builders, and others from across Southern New England and around the world.  The book includes stories and historic pictures of the organists, choirs, and pipe organs, including:

*The impressive 1896 Hutchings Organ, at the time the largest pipe organ in Connecticut and the first to incorporate E. M. Skinner’s electronic action (yes, it was here!)
*The intertwining histories of the church’s architecture and its music ministry
* The death of the organist, at the organ console, during Easter morning worship
* The tale of a tenor who really made a splash
