Ministries

There are several ministries in South Church that enliven our faith community and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world.  Below are some of the specifics.....

Some of our outreach projects in the city include....

G.R.A.C.E. Co-operative -  Begun in 2008 out of concern for the city's children, Church members provide weekly tutoring support for students at the Northend Elementary School.

The Christmas Dinner ~ For the past 30 years, on Christmas Day, the church hosts dinner for nearly 500 people.  Folks come from all over town for a hot meal and much good cheer.  South Church is mindful that on the day of his birth, Jesus had no safe, warm place to reside.  We are pleased to offer a place of hospitality and warmth for all who wish, from all walks of life.

Rebuilding Together ~
Each year, a South Church team provides repair work and improvements for a neighbor-in-need.  Click here to see photos of our 2008 walk....

Clean & Sober Movie Night ~ Usually, in the evening on the first Sunday of the month.  All are invited, especially those involved with 12 step recovery programs.   Click here to read an article from the New Britain Herald....

Walk Against Hunger ~
A Great Event!  The South Church team raises money for the Friendship Center each year.

The Giving Tree ~ South Church partners with the Klingberg Center - a home for emotionally troubled children - where we provide Christmas presents for the children each year.

The Church also has a lively and nurturing ministry for pastoral care and education that include....

Wednesday Morning Bible Study ~ open to seekers and scholars alike.  A warm, enriching group that studies the scripture each week at 10am in the Library.

Grace Place! ~ South Church's terrific Sunday School and Nursery.  There is a place for every child - from the infant to the teenager.

The Deacons ~ A dedicated group concerned about the overall spiritual welfare of the congregation.  In addition to their oversight for the spiritual life of the church, the Deacons serve communion for shut-ins and reach out to those in need.

Stephen Ministry ~ South Church is pleased to support a Stephen Ministry program.  Members receive specialized training in pastoral care, reflective listening, prayerful support.  Stephen Ministers are then paired with members with special needs.  The Stephen Ministry Program enriches the pastoral outreach for the faith community

Prayer Shawl Ministry ~ Members meet each month to knit prayer shawls for those who are struggling or have special needs.  Prayer, fellowship, and meditative craftwork foster a warm and supportive and environment for all.

Daughters of Ruth ~ A fellowship of women who support one another on their faith journey.  Activities include retreats, fellowship meetings, and outreach projects.

The YAHOO's (The Young At Heart Senior Group) ~ A monthly gathering of South Church seniors who lunch together, enjoy speakers, and stay connected with one another and the wider church community.

... And we rejoice in our active music ministry that includes...

The Chancel Choir ~ An ebullient, joyful chorus, more than 40 voices strong!

The Music Series at South Church ~ A popular concert series, now in its 36th season, which presents concerts and events featuring high quality, outstanding nationally and internationally known artists, with admission affordable and accessible to all.
